Preservation is mainly focused on providing a storage or exhibit environment that will preserve the object, by slowing degradation, for the future. The storage environment should consist of an acid free, supportive housing. This may be as simple as wrapping the object in acid free tissue and placing it in an acid free box. Other objects may need a custom-built mount in order to support their weak areas. An example of this would be an acid free foam head that is carved to fit a specific hat. Without the support the brim would have too much weight resting on it causing it to become brittle and eventually break. Creating padded hangers, support straps (for hanging heavy skirts or pants), dress bags, custom storage boxes, micro-climate units, and rolled storage apparatus are some other examples of storage furniture. I will describe exhibit mounts and needs in the appropriate section.
